Could this be a a good description of the Google search algorithm? In some senses although it sounds like the title to a corny fantasy movie or an evangelical call - perhaps it is. As Google gets bigger and more powerful - it's mission statement has changed slightly over the years -

"Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."

The organize statement is probably true - it's easy to think of Google as some huge benign librarian who delivers the information we require. However this power is immense - the power to deliver your web site in response to a query has huge commercial, economic and even political significance. Much of the Western world now looks to the Internet to answer our questions, give solutions to our problems or even inspiration to our lives.

Although Google doesn't directly control the content of the Internet it largely determines which pages are seen the most and customizes our experiences on the web.

For instance - this weekend I have to remove several radiators in our house to decorate - this is something I've never done before. It looks quite simple but I can't resist typing the query into Google "how to remove a radiator" - Google directs me to a page with very clear instructions.

This is great and exactly what we need from the internet - but what's my point ? Ok I do some work in SEO optimizing web pages for the search engines. I get paid by boosting the search engine rankings of my clients - it can be time consuming but it's not difficult. I know what the search engines look for and can tailor my customers web sites to help them rank higher.

Now any SEO professional with a modicum of skill could produce a web site to rank very highly for the search query above - " how to remove a radiator" is not very commercial and nobody has optimised pages specifically for this search phrase. Could I reverse the instructions and cause havoc across the globe to all poorly skilled DIY'ers like myself. Certainly I could if I wanted to - unless Google have a team of plumbing experts on hand to analyse such search requests! Of course I wouldn't dream of doing this but it certainly makes you think about the power of both Google and SEO.

This is the heart of the problem and one we as SEO professionals should consider - Google is not responsible for the information on these web pages but it is responsible largely for the ones we read. This carries a huge amount of responsibility.

SO what am I trying to say ?

Well I'm trying to make you think about the future of search engine optimisation. We are all capable of promoting our own and our customers web sites much higher in the search engine rankings than someone who has never heard of SEO. Does that make the content of our pages better - probably not it just makes them more visible.

Google will be well aware of this responsibility and its fundamental economic existence relies on it delivering the best results for Google searchers. Google knows this is the basis both of its survival and economic success. The company is not going to stand still and wait for it's results to be manipulated by professional content writers and link specialists. The searcher needs the content to answer his query - he doesn't give a fig if that query is in his title tag or that page has 13000 one way inbound links.

The world of SEO will change rapidly over the next few years - focussing on the truth - making sure your web pages provides ever expanding and relevant content is going to be the only consistent ranking factor. This is of course only the authors very humble opinion.
