For the same keyword and I did not hire any SEO experts for it neither I invested a fortune. I do not use adwords. It took around 8 months of regular repeatative work. I will share with you today some simple technics that I used and that can push your website up also. These looks simple and been said before but they demand patience to implement them. There is a difference between reading and actually implementing it.

Here they are:

1. Be honest with the content. Should be original.
2. Try adding bit of content at regular intervals. Every week may be.
3. Optimize your website. A lot of websites are there who will suggest how much your website is optimized for a specific keyword.
4. Use H1, H2 and P tags wherever applicable.
5. Repeat your webpage title in your webpage heading.
6. Avoid too much outbound links from the homepage.
7. Try to make the website W3C compatible as much as possible.
8. Focus on one keyword phrase and try to work on it. Once it gets a position follow the same techniques for the other keyphrases.
9. Post comments on blogs you have subscribed to. Use your keyword phrase as the anchor text.
10. If you have a buddy blogger ask him to review your website as a blogpost with a few links (again keyphrase as anchor text), do the same for him if you maintain a blog.
11. Try to get some blogroll links. Look for them.
12. Submit your site to Digg, Stumble, Propeller etc. When you meet an associate ask him politely to dig your website. Do not buy professional services that offer 500 diggs for $5. Will get your diggs banned. I have experienced it.
13. Look for sites with a similar niche that offer advertisements. Go for a text ad instead of a banner one. You need to get your site up on the search engines. Do not loose your focus by thinking that a banner will get you more visitors. You need quality backlinks.
14. Avoid link exchanges. Avoid Link Farms. Avoid Directories.
15. Submit to DMOZ and Yahoo directories.
16. Use your keywords in your forum signature links. If you see someone selling signature links at some forum buy it. Again you need backlinks.
17. Submit freshly written articles to article directories. The cream ones. Avoid the rest.
